WHEN Vatsyayana compiled his magnum opus on sexual behaviour, little did he imagine that his modern Indian male protagonist would be so lazy in bed. Indian men are said to last the least time in sexual activities. Are Indian men so quick — only off the mark — because they are tensed up by doubts about their inadequacy, or is the act more one of procreation?. Perhaps, behind the psyche of the Indian urban male is a cloying doubt that he will not be able to rise to the occasion and that his staying power will not match that of his brothers elsewhere.

Strangely, despite a lacklustre performance, India has the second largest population in the world. This can only be a tribute to the fertility of those who inhabit this land from which the Kama Sutra originated and to their not practising family planning. Since the urban male is “competitive”, it is also, perhaps, peer pressure which detracts from his giving and taking pleasure coolly. More clinically,a circumcised male would be less sensitive, which may be one way of preventing haste making waste. And finally, shouldn’t the Indian male perform in a more comfortable manner by reversing roles and allowing his partner to run the show?
